SCHOOL BUS FLEET - Electric Vehicle Project

Smart Growth with Great Financial Benefits

Electric School Bus Fleet Charging Microgrid

Since October of 2023, CSMG principals have provided pro-bono technical support to the Cherokee Boys Club Fleet Management Department in designing and budgeting for winning a $3.5 million EPA Climate Pollution Reduction Grant, to build an off-grid Solar Charging Microgrid for 21 EVSBs, and 1 Volvo Battery Electric Tractor Truck. See photo gallery below.

  • 240 kW Solar Canopy PV

  • 200 kWh of Stationary Battery Energy Storage and 4,5 mWh of Rolling School Bus Battery Energy Storage

  • Completion and Commissioning Date: August 2026

Project Advantages

Electrification and Replacement of 21 Diesel School Buses lead to the following advantages:

  • Thomas Built Battery Electric School Buses manufactured regionally in High Point, North Carolina.

  • Reduced diesel particulate matter exposure for school children, reducing Childhood Asthma.

  • Lower maintenance and fuel costs added greater budget resiliency to higher fuel cost inflation.

Innovative design, local leadership, and demonstration of reduced strain on existing Grid infrastructure to meet new electrical loads added to the success of this project.
